ENTRY 04 - RETURN TO WY’EAST

Presence. Intention. Craft.
FEBRUARY 20 - GOVERNMENT CAMP, OR - CLOUDY - 18F

What I noticed
  • Uncomfortable at the start. Poor sleep and an upset stomach.
  • Awareness that I might be holding back the younger, fitter skier I was with.
  • New snow with few tracks in it yet — a treat.
What worked
  • Finding a sustainable climbing rhythm.
  • Setting expectations with the skier I was with about my capacity for the day.
  • Getting into the trees and exploring untracked pockets.
  • Taking our time, and not forcing climbs higher on the mountain in low visibility.
In the margin

The spacious quiet on this mountain can feel transcendent — climbing hard into it with no one around.
